God is the governor of the dispensations of all men.The 'Crook In The Lot' are those things which seem cross to us,are not agreeable to us,and in the deep recesses of the heart,perhaps we think are unnecessary.The creator and governor of all things,so orders things,that these 'Crooks' are specifically ordered in the lives of God's people for their growth in grace and usefulness in their Lord's service.One thing especially that the Lord's people come to see is God's goodness to them in so afflicting them-Psalm 119:71'It is good for me that I have been afflicted;that I might learn thy statutes.'In order for the believer to most fully benefit from God's afflicting providential dealings towards them they should-p.5 ..."eye the first cause of the crook in your lot;behold how it is the work of God,His doing." The tendency of many is to look at the second cause(the person who has hurt or sinned against them,the illness disease or handicap in and of itself,the rejection or persecution from those who are opposed to God and his people and sometimes trials at the hands of fellow believers)but God is the prime mover in all these things.They can all be traced back to His Sovereign will accomplishing that which he has purposed to fulfill.
It should be obvious to most that 'The Crook' in itself is not pleasant(it is because of man's fall into sin that it has become necessary)but the spiritual man who looks at his afflictions through the eye of faith can perceive some of the goodness in it(or rather the good that God brings out of it)-"but whatever the crook in the lot is to the eye of faith,it is not at all pleasant to the eye of sense."
Another way in which christians benefit from 'the Lord's afflicting dispensations' is that it exposes to them(and sometimes to onlookers)something of the depth of the corruption of the human heart.Boston writes about Asaph(while he with struggling with discouragement due to the property of the wicked which was clearly before him)-'verily I have cleansed my heart in vain,and washed my hands in innocence.' Asaph did not truly believe this(that a life of godliness was worthless and meaningless)but if we view our circumstances merely by sight,we too can succumb to the temptation to spout an atheistic thought such as this.
The Lord in His wisdom often brings pressure in the area(in which the believer by nature)would least desire to be pressed.Why would the Lord,in His wisdom,especially bring pressure where we judge ourselves to be most vulnerable?-p.11...it falls on that,which of anything most rivals Him." What love! What wisdom! The Lord specifically tailors our trials with the purpose of rooting out that which most stands in the way of our loving Him more.We set up idols in our hearts that compete with our love for the Lord and God brings 'The Crook In The Lot' particularly suited to our need,to weaken and ultimately extinguish those false gods from our hearts and minds.He is a jealous God and He will brook no rivals.
God uses the various 'Crooks' in the lives of His people o work greater humility in them.He desires that we come to see-"a sense of our own worthlessness and nothingness before Him." A number of the eminent saints in God's Word came to understand this(often after exceedingly deep trials,or in the midst of them)-Job 'Behold I am vile'Job 40:4,Isaiah 'Woe is me:for I am undone;I am a man of unclean lips'(Isaiah 6:5),Abraham 'Behold,I am but dust and ashes',the apostle Paul saw himself as 'the chief of sinners'. Though we are often amazed and sometimes perplexed at our Lord's Sovereign dealings with us,a mature and godly response even in the deepest trial should be-"a silent submission under the hand of God." The godly Job in his reply to God '...What shall I answer you,I will lay my hand on my mouth.'
When God's people are brought into very humbling circumstances and they have grown in their understanding of 'God's ways in His providential dealings towards them' ,a great indication that this work has taken deep root in their hearts will be an attitude such as this-p.65"settle it in your heart that there is need of all the humbling circumstances you are put in ... God brings no needless trials on us." This is more than just an acceptance of some difficult trial,a thorn in the flesh or a painful affliction,it is the realization that this is necessary for God's work to progress in me and it comes from the hand of my loving Heavenly Father.It is for my eternal good and His eternal glory.
Thomas Boston,the Scottish Presbyterian,is historically viewed,as being at the tail end of the Puritan era.He is most well known for 'Human Nature In Its Fourfold State'.The Crook InThe Lot might be considered his most important work.That is certainly my conviction.

Excellent book just ask Fred or Gary
Easier to read than many Puritan writings. Helps puts life's trials in scriptural perspective.
Here is a classic written by a man of God and one who understood the sovereignty of God in the light of men's afflictions. Life is rough but knowing that God is in supreme control even if the events in this life seem crooked - is hope undiminished. God is good all the time and all the time He is good.
This book is a must read for all believers in Christ. At some point we will all face trials in our lives. Thomas Boston shows us plainly from the Scriptures how we are to view our trials and how we are to behave while in a trial. Also it is worth noting that Boston preached this series of sermons during a time of great physical suffering in his life. He is speaking to us from experience with a pastor's heart. My wife and I have been greatly convicted, encouraged, strengthened, and changed by this book.
One disadvantage believers have today is that they don't value their trials enough. Scripture is clear that, on the one hand, they are a result of sin; on the other hand, they are God's gift to us for our sanctification.
Thomas Boston unpacks the benefits of suffering, their purposes, and the reward for enduring them (or the consequences of trying to avoid them altogether). The version was a little tough to read in places because there were some obvious typos that made you read a sentence a couple times to figure out what was actually being said, but I recommend this book for anyone.
The primary title of the book (The Crook in the Lot) comes from Ecclesiastes 713 -- `Consider the work of God, for who is able to straighten what He has bent?' The subject matter of this e-book was originally subtitled The Sovereignty and Wisdom of God Displayed in the Afflictions of Men. Quoting Thomas Boston from the book,
"There is not anything whatever befalls us without his overruling hand."
"...the purpose of the text under these three heads.
I. Whatever crook there is in our lot, it is of God's making.
II. What God sees fit to mar, no one will be able to mend in his lot.
III. The considering of the crook in the lot as the work of God, or of His making, is a proper means to bring us to a Christian deportment under it."
