Sally Deane Norton poured her heart out when she wrote this book, leaving the reader with a deeply moving story that demonstrates the depths to which human love can go, and how that love acts as a foundation for enormous courage, inner strength and fortitude when faced with losing someone you cherish as much as life itself. As I read her book, I felt Sally's struggle when she decided to free herself from a very difficult marriage. I rejoiced with her when she found the love of her life, and I wept with her as she moved through her beloved husband's unexpected battle with cancer.
While we may know people who have fought or are fighting a battle against cancer, rarely do we have the opportunity to “witness” the raw emotions that become their constant companion as they move through all that cancer entails. The resilience both Sally and her husband, Paul, displayed testifies to the strength of their love and their faith.
Sally’s nursing skills, plus her hospice experience, was a blessing for both of them. She knew what to do and when to do it, but that knowledge did not relieve either of them from the necessity of finding a way to accept the fact that Paul was slowly and surely dying. How they met that challenge most certainly will be an inspiration for the readers of this book, just as it was for me.
I’ve believed for a long time that all things – regardless of what they are - come bearing a gift. Sally’s story bears testimony to this truism. Not only did Sally bear her loss with great courage, she wrote this book so others can know that death and grief are not the end of the story. The love is still there, and that love never ends.
