What a lovely book. The right amount of sweet and true, of faith and... what's the opposite of faith? Fear. But not faith or fear of God, but in the decency or lack there of in each human being.

Likes: The sweet, sad, and whimsical plot of a couple of young kids (13-ish) watching their world unravel and hoping that by confronting the past (in more ways than one) they can prevent a huge miscarriage of justice. Not only are they trying to save Margaret's father, who is innocent, but the man who callously sentenced him to death. A horrible man inflicting pain on others who once was a good and decent person, what changed? And what can still change? I loved the hopeful, kind language even in the face of terrible, horrible events... how the authors never let you believe, even in the worst moments, that we are the sum of the worst parts of us. good+good+good+good > BAD. Very sweet and awesome, very touching book.

Dislikes: Well, for how much building there was to confronting Lucas Biggs, the ending with him felt awfully rushed and a bit anticlimactic. The way he was presented in 1938 felt fleshed out and had depth; the 2014 version fell flat. I wish some of the poetic and lovely turns of phrase and been more pervasive, there were many lovely quotes, I wish there had been more of it.

Saving Lucas Biggs is the kind of middle grade novel that ends up being read by everyone in the house. The authors have provided a tightly plotted story featuring a set of protagonists that practically leap off the page. The quality of the writing is also worth noting- fans of Ms. de los Santos' adult novels will be recognize that she brings the same graceful prose and flair for dialogue to her middle grade fiction as with her adult best-sellers. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Saving Lucas Biggs is its fresh take on a well-worn plot device time travel. Despite a plethora of recent novels featuring time travel, Ms. de los Santos and Mr. Teague dodge the well-worn tropes and never seem derivative; there was not a moment during Saving Lucas Biggs where I thought, "I've read this before."

As alluded to by a previous reviewer, substantive issues involving social justice and environmental awareness are central themes to the novel. However, in my opinion, the authors manage to avoid any sense of being overtly political or heavy-handed in this regard; the novel is thought-provoking but never pedantic.

In summary, Saving Lucas Biggs is the kind of book that both teens and their parents will devour- with enough substance that it just may end up being required middle-school reading.
I LOVE this book! I LOVE Marisa de los Santos - anything she writes seems to be sublime. I didn't know until the end of the book that its' meant for young adult readers....guess that shows that I'm a child at heart...I usually enjoy them, too.

This book was exceptional, though, and I love it dearly. ALMOST as much as I loved her first two books. I am looking forward with joyful anticipation to the next one. I think I'll buy it in advance.
I am not sure who the target audience is for this book, maybe middle schoolers, but I was expecting a very different book because Marisa de los Santos is listed as the author. It has none of her lovely prose, wit, or wise insights.
My favorite new author. She has a keen ear for dialog and builds characters much as Maeve Binchy and Rosamund Pilcher did. Her use of language is nuanced and insightful but a bit heavy on similes. Stories are creative and always keep me entertained. This one involves time travel but it isn't a sci fi novel. I look forward to each new book of hers.
Outstanding mix of history, fantasy, and complicated interpersonal relationships! 13 year old heroine Margaret must save her dad from judicial injustice using her family's secret ability to travel through time. The story is told in the voices of Margaret and Joshua and flashes between present and past. The authors make the jumps in both time and perspective easy to follow and make the reader laugh and cry, while wondering how it will all resolve itself right up until the end. As librarian on my campus, I suggested this book as the year's first read-aloud for fifth graders.
Marisa de Los Santos is one of my favorite authors. This is the first time I have read one of her young adult books. As a fifth grade teacher, I have read lots of children's novels. I'm always sad to see that sometimes authors sugar-coat, dilute, and simplify for young people. This is not true for De Los Santos. Her plot is intricate, her characters ring true, her language is complex and beautiful. If you enjoy time-travel books, please try this one. It does not disappoint. At the same time, the reader is challenged to think about the importance of friendship, the meaning of family, the influence of history, and the challenge of accomplishing a courageous act. De Los Santos and David Teague have collaborated seamlessly on this book.
This is an intriguing book that blends time travel, the labor movement, and a young woman’s love for her father, who has been sentenced to death by the hanging judge Lucas Biggs. Tribal tricks, hidden lore, and intense motivation allow Margaret to slip through time in an effort to change the outcome. Maybe she could save her Dad, if only, if only… If only machine guns hadn’t been turned on the striking miners 76 years before. If only Lucas Biggs weren’t so bitter, so avaricious, so obsessed with controlling the town she lives in. If only the president of Victory Fuels hadn’t been murdered. Is it possible she CAN change the past? She is determined to find out with the help of her best friend’s grandfather, who back in 1938 is her age.
Alternating between 2014 and 1938, this is one of the most exciting YA novels I’ve read.
